Despite the good weather, we had exactly the same number of cards given back for R4 as we did for R3 - 124. This took the overall number of individual competitors who entered at least one comp over the four rounds to 276 which we found quite staggering. The feedback was great with novices enjoying the comps as well as the experts. The standard of climbing again was very high and the generously softer routes meant 4 ties for 1st placed males in R4 but a clear split in the league. The separate head to head co read full post

It's been a strange winter, but I'm starting to come out from my hibernation. Only it hasn't been hibernation... it's been a strange experience in constant motion for the last few months... very little rest, a very lot of movement, and very little of any of it within as much of my own direction or control as I've become accustomed to. The short version might be, "Shit happens." So, whatever I'd call it, here I am. I'm holed up for a couple of days in soft-water Spokane Valley, WA, in a kinda ok hotel. read full post

As much as I love being around people - especially friends and family - I consider myself relatively introverted. My good friend Sarah says I'm an introvert with extrovert tendencies, meaning I love being around people and being social, but need a significant amount of alone time, what I affectionately call "Katie Time" to recharge. That being said, I have difficulty figuring out how to handle situations in which I receive attention and encouragement, including big birthday parties....and fund raising effo read full post

The journey to Valencia was a short and pleasant one. At a mere 75 miles, it was a real blink-and-you’d-miss-it kind of a journey. We were well hardened to long drives by this point. We checked into our Best Western and chilled out for a few minutes, before heading out for dinner. Aside from the [...] read full post

I decided to send our progress emails to all who donated to my Summit for Someone climb. But it didn't sem fair to limit it to those people! Here's the first, enjoy! Thanks so much for your incredible generosity and show of support for my Summit for Someone climb! Each of you have done something amazing for me and Big City Mountaineers (BCM). With your help, I'm currently only $245 short of my fund raising goal! June 13th was the date that we reviewed some Motavation volumes... they were a new company making wooden volumes. What we said was wrong with the volumes was that they needed to have screw placements cleaned up, having an option of grip paint would have been cool and some other minor points that you can read about here.Just after Xmas a package arrived with three new volumes, volumes that were read full post

We were greeted by another cloudless, California morning when we awoke from a good nights sleep in our modest Super 8 room. Right, sorry about that. Where was I?… We snaked our way down through the desert back roads back into California. The stresses and strains of Nevada now far behind us we rolled into the small and understated town of Joshua Tree. Benny had been here by himself the previous year, and his tails of crazy arrangements [...] read full post

It was a perfect, beautiful Sunday for a hike to the Pinnacle, touted as one of Pennsylvania's greatest vistas. AT thru-hikers have remarked it's one of the prettiest views in the state, and I'm beginning to agree with them! We did the hike as a group this past August, but visibility was so awful from a thunderstorm rolling in that we didn't get to see more then three feet in front of us when we got to the vista. I told other TerraMar guide on the hike with me that I didn't believe there was any vista at a read full post

It's the 4th and final round of our winter bouldering league this Saturday 6th March. We've well over £2000 worth of Ellis Brigham vouchers and prizes (DMM, Beta, Boreal and TCA) to give away with R4 winners, league winners, a head to head comp and a free raffle for all entrants. Ellis Brigham will also be setting up a shop on site for the day and there will be a bar from 2pm serving a selection of botted beers (for over 18's only - you will be asked for ID if you are a fortunately youthful looking c read full post

Since we last spoke I said some things, you said some things we talked, but did we really communicate?I'm now in Las Vegas, the weirdest place in the states. You can drink in the streets, smoke indoors, gamble and get prostitutes all legally. The trip started off a bit rocky. We were supposed to leave Friday after work and drive as far as possible. However my good friend TD called up around 2 in the afternoon and wanted to know if I wanted to come to the opening ceremonies of the Olympics? Well of course read full post

I've been thinking about climbing ethics a lot lately. So I thought I'd throw down a list of some of my main issues and some other ethics that others have mentioned as well.1. The Dab. (To come in contact with the ground or an object outside of the climb itself whether it be a person or tree)Okay with all ethics there seems like there could be some grey area. For me if I'm climbing a problem I haven't done before no dab is allowed. Now if I've climbed the problem before cleanly the dab becomes a bit less s read full post
