Website feedback
Since we made a lot of big changes to Climbfind recently and will continue working on it a lot over the next few weeks, we thought now was a good time to resurrect the feedback section. We know the site is far from perfect, criticism is welcome.

Why not to post ages of climbers? I am a 26 yr old female and would be more comfortable reaching out to people in their 20s and 30s, and think I would use this service more if I could screen climbers based upon that in addition to climbing ability.

I guess most people would not give their real age for this system, so I didn't think that it would be worth asking for it and making the registration process one bit more complicated.

Hi guys. Bit of confusion about the peak district. There seems to be "the peak" "the peaks" and "peak" does this take you to the same page? Do they all need combining under one name? Do I need to post under all three to ensure a partner call is read? Cheers Jim

- Jonathon Kresner replied:
Thanks for pointing that out. We've cleaned it up, hope it's less confusing now. We are finding it increasingly challenging to manage all the places that users add as the site continues to grow. We are putting together a team of moderators for 2010 to help us keep track of all the places around the world and quality of content associated with them. If it interests you, drop us a line by email

Quick feedback regarding my user experience:
I had a bit of trouble finding how to filter the feed by tags. I was looking for somewhere to "search the feed".
I'd recommend allowing text search of the feed, with optional filtering by tags (maybe in the form of a dropdown select input allowing me to specify the tag to filter by)
Thanks for such a great site!

The point of watching climbers is that they appear in the "Climbers" channel on your homepage feed. This way you can keep track of where specific climbers / friends are climbing rather than seeing the latest posts.

YES! Places need to be tagged with Area Tags. This is how Climbfind knows to bring up the right places for the area pages (say http://www.climbfind.com/climbing-around/canada/alberta) and the homepage feed.
To tag a place, go to its page and find the link that says "Edit details" on that screen you can add area tags.

Partner calls are now 'Date independent'. I.e. you post a partner call if you want partners but not for a specific date. If you want to climb at a certain time, post to the new Climbing feed on the homepage.

We've had this dicussion internally many times. We feel that Climbfind is quite unique as far a climbing sites come and adding a forum would be going backwards. No disrespect to Ian Maxwell, but I think it would be a shame if such a great resource as Climbfind suffer the same fate as many other sites, and end up as a tawdy, online billboard.

The other thought off the top of my head was a trip announcement area. People can post when/where they are going climbing and invite locals or others who want to travel there at the same time to meet up with them. I usually do this via facebook, but of course that doesn't reach people I'm not friends with so adding the functionality here would be great, especially for really social climbing such as bouldering for example or if someone needs a partner for a specific trip. A vital part of this would be the ability to "watch" a crag or region for new trips being posted (possibly with criteria like bouldering/trad/sport and so on for refinement once the site gets busy) with optional e-mail alerts being sent out notifying people and linking to the newly created trip so they can ask questions/join etc.
Sorry for going on a bit...

I've got a couple of ideas so I'm dropping them here as requested:
At the moment it seems adding a location I climb at puts me on the "Regulars" list. I think it would be great to be able to customise that further to give people a better idea of who really is a fixture somewhere and who only shows up from time to time. ie having "daily, 2-3 times a week, once a week, 2-3 times a month, occaisional" categories.
You could even go so far as to allow people to specify their usual training times by day of the week and morning/afternoon/evening/all day. I think that would really help match people better so I could instantly see for example that someone trains at X on a tuesday evening, at Y on a thursday afternoon and then climbs in the Peaks all weekend.

hey, you should have a photo gallery where people can upload photos of themselves climbing...
You could choose the best photo every month to go on the home page!

Hey Krez,
Nice site! You may want to think about linking in with the database that http://bouldr.net has. I wouldn't see you two pages as competition and I would say they have a database of climbing areas that may be good to feed into yours.
Just an idea.
Cheers,
Robin

For now Climbfind is a niche indoor climbing site. If we get pressure from the community to make a move into outdoor at a later stage we will look into it.

Hey Krez, great idea and cool site. how about allowing members to have a more detailed profile particularly regarding their climbing history / experience. You could build an application to allow climbers to upload some sort of an outdoor climbing scorecard detailing the routes they did / ticked, locations they have been to, projects they are working on, as well as comments on routes they recommend etc...This could also fit in nicely with any future plans you may have to allow members finding outdoor climbing partners...Anyway, I'm impressed with your site and watching that space :)

Giving out your phone number is completely optional (I know I wouldn't do it even on my own site! but many people are comfortable with it). If you want to contact someone via email, just use the send message button on their profile :)

Krez, you focusing on just the social networking aspects of this site or also in what you could potentially do with the content you collate? My advice is that you think long and hard about different ways you could potentially organise this information better, in particular how you may get others to add content for you and what this may do for first timers coming to your site. For example - find your nearest climb centre through putting in your postcode. Shit like that will give first timers a bit more satisfaction in coming to the site and increase your page impressions - which advertisers love. Once you build up that kind of functionality engagement can be pushed through the social aspects.
Hope you find that useful.
keep well bud!
Cheers,

Yes, this is great advice and I'm trying very hard to think along these lines. One of the big ideas that I had was to build a feature where users could blog about their climbing trips. Then when other users are looking at outdoor climbing locations (say the closest near there postcode! great idea..) they can read up and view pictures of other peoples experiences there. I hope to get around to building this feature before next march, but it seems like a big job and I'm trying to focus all my energy on marketing for the next 8 weeks so we will see how things unfold.

Hey Krez, is it possible to get a "change your email address" thingy or am I just not looking in the right place?
30 Oct
- Jonathon Kresner replied:
Unfortunately Climbfind was built on top of other technology that does not let users do this. We have no plans to fix this in the short term. If you need your email address changed we can do it for you manually. Feel free to email us at contact@climbfind.com

Great looking site Jon - move the comma in the following sentence to after the word website or remove it completely. (I recommend removing it)
"ClimbFind.com is a free, website that helps you meet people in your climbing community. "
Don't worry - I will have more substantive feedback later - just getting started!

Is it possible to make a 'see who is online in your area' and an online chat facility?
Likewise, if you know you are going overseas and looking to climb in that place, it would be equally useful to be able to have live chat with someone who lives there who might also be online.

Awesome ideas! As the user base grows we plan to build feautres to let you search for other users. Having status upadates, or a "where are you now" would be a great feature to look into. As for online chat... it would be great, but a bit difficult to build at this point in time. Who knows if everything goes well maybe take another look into it in 6 months :)

Hey krez, great website!! This will definately be an asset to anyone looking to go climbing around the world!!
ust a minor thing - when you pick 'nationality' it lists countries. I am not 'Australia' - I am 'AustraliaN' if that makes sense. Did you maybe mean 'Country in which you
reside?'
Keep up the good work!! Ev.
