The Crux an indoor rock climbing gym, located in Eugene, Oregon, two hours west of Smith Rock, 100 miles south of Portland. We established this site to provide information for climbers interested in climbing at the Crux, in the Pacific Northwest, or--for that matter--anywhere there's a mountain, a big rock, a craggy wall, an eager climber.... The Crux has over 9,000 square feet of climbing walls, including aretes, roofs, overhangs, bouldering caves, lots of low angles, and leadable routes featuring two Entre Prises Imprint Panel Systems and one Entre Prises Imprint Panel bouldering area. We have 30 rope stations, 18 of which are leadable; and three bouldering areas for solo workouts. We also have full weight training, cardiovascular training, and locker and shower room facilities. And when you are finished, we have great Hawaiian teriyaki food and coffee for your pleasure at our Ron's Island Grill.

I moved to Eugene back in Fall 2011 and climbed at the Crux for about 9 months. I will be back this coming Fall, when their student membership deals start again. The employees are down-to-earth and friendly, and incredibly helpful and fun to climb with. The gym has a great boulder wall/cave with everything from vertical to overhang in the cave, and quite a few routes of all grades up to about V6-8. The route setters are great--a few of them regularly put up some truly all-star routes. Some people complain that the bouldering is over-taped, but I've never felt that way--they're just trying to maximize limited space. The toprope/lead is also good here, though most of the routes are lower grade (5.10 or below). The higher grades are quality routes though. I would dig if there was a bit more variety in the lead routes..the lack of straight vertical routes and ceiling problems is why I split my time between here and the UO rock wall. The other climbers/members here are generally nice, helpful, and also fun to climb with. There's a nice range of age too--good climbers both young and old. I've made some great climbing friends/partners in the short time I've climbed here. Overall if you're in the area or just stopping by, I highly recommend checking the Crux out.
