Grampians

The Grampians is a stunningly beautiful location of international repute for its brilliant climbing. There are literally hundreds of cliffs and thousands of climbs. The rock varies between magnificent red quartzite (the same as Mt Arapiles) to hard grey sandstone.

Most climbs can be adequately protected with a traditional rack made up of wires, nuts, cams, quickdraws and slings. Bring a wide selection, particularly on long multi-pitch climbs. Some harder climbs have bolts, with or without hangers, so carrying a few portable bolt plates may come in handy.

There are 14 official camp sites. Fees are around $7.50 per site, per night, for up to six people. Sites have toilets, picnic tables and fireplaces. A few sites have tap water but it is always best to carry your own.

Otherwise, you can camp in one of the many rough bush sites found throughout the area. Check the park Visitor Centre (613) 5356 4381 for camp site fees, and be aware of total fire bans which can result in serious charges if not obeyed.

Directions

The Grampians National Park is situated 235 km west of Melbourne via Ballarat on the Western Highway. The drive to Halls Gap near Central Grampians, takes three hours from Melbourne via Ballarat, Ararat and Stawell. Most cliffs in the park are within an hour drive of Halls Gap.

The Victoria Range on the south-western side can be reached by driving from Ballarat, though Dunkeld to Cavendish, then north along the Henty Highway.

From Natimuk (and Mt Arapiles), the easiest route is to Horsham then down the Western Highway to Stawell, and Halls Gap (1 hour all up). Adelaide to Halls Gap via the Western Highway is 460 km and takes almost six hours.

By public transport, you can take a Greyhound bus (VLine train part of the way) from Melbourne to Stawell. Beware, the weekend bus route takes longer and does not stop at Stawell on its way to Horsham, add an hour.

See the guide book 'Grampians: Selected Climbs' by Simon Mentz and Glenn Tempest (2001) for more info.

    Hi All,

I am a French student in Melbounre since tow months. I am desperately looking for a climbing partner. I have tried chocksotne but not much success. I don't have a car, no rope and no gear because it was to heavy to bring with me these stuff in the plane.

The next week end it's a long week end and I am looking for some poeples to head up to Araps or Grampians to climb some teens grade (Ozie grade) from the 6th to the 8th of June. I can lead and practice climbing since a long time.

So if your are interested let me know! It can be fun.

    Cheers

    Raph

Hi - I'm entering into an extended holiday as of the beginning of May and would like to spend as much of it as possible exploring the climber's wonderland that is Australia. Based in Sydney I'm particularly interested in getting out to the Bungles, Grampians or Mt. Arapiles. That said, there are tonnes of crags in the Bluies I haven't touched yet either, so if anyone's got anything planned there, don't be a stranger.

Currently I have very little experience on lead but am eager to be open, put in hard work and learn. I'm an easygoing Canadian, hardy and adaptable but also happy to enjoy creature comforts when they present themselves. As I'm just moving into more techncial styles I don't have much gear at the moment but am more than willing to acquire some, as well as contribute to trip expenses and organization.

As for the climbs: I'm hungry to try everything... technical, epic, committed, reachy, pumpy, scenic ... you name it.

I look forward to any inquiries or invites.
    Cheers, Ian

Oy. Taking a tour around the pacific and looking for people to rope up with. Just got down to St Kilda and planning on heading to Arapiles and/or the Gramps for a few weeks. Got a few potential links through Chockstone, but I figured I'd just whore it up across the whole wide intardweb and find as many possible climbing partners as possible. I don't have my rack with me (I do have a rope), but I'm an experienced leader on gear.

Having a great trip so far, but it's been weeks since I've sunk my hands into a warm crack. Hoping Araps has what I need. Anyone out there looking to swing leads?

I have a guide book for the Blue Mts and am looking to use it. I have my gear and some additional gear (1 rope, some beeners and draws), but no one to climb with.
