Grotto Canyon

Part of: Climbing at Canadian Rocky Mountains
About: Grotto Canyon is located in the deep valley immediately east of Grotto Mountain in Canmore. Many of the routes are modern sport climbs but some were established from the ground up and others date from the early days of rap bolting, when protection was often sketchy by today's standards. Despite a fair bit of retrofitting, some of the climbs still have loose rock, are poorly bolted, and lack proper top anchors. Rock polishing has occurred on several cliffs. In some cases, such as at Illusion Rock, routes have become slippery and dangerous to lead as a result of excessive toproping.
Sunshine is often hard to find in Grotto Canyon, and several of the cliffs languish in perpetual shade.
Access: Expect creek crossings and wet feet!
Approach: At Bymag plant turn onto there rd but dont go to plant, head stright on gravel rd for about 150m in which you can park there or you can turn left onto a single line track and drive about 300m or when the rd ends and park there. Head up the short hill and follow good trail to entrence of canyon.
