The Peak District
Rock climbing is a popular activity in the Peak District; particularly on edges such as Stanage or Froggatt. Generally the climbing style is free climbing (as opposed to aid climbing) and the rock is either gritstone or limestone. Climbing has been practised in the Peak District since the late 19th century; James W. Puttrell is generally credited with starting the sport. There are over 10,000 routes in the Peak District. One of the most famous Peak District climbers, and a pioneer of many new routes, is Ron Fawcett. The Climb known as "Master's Edge", on Millstone Edge, near Hathersage, is a testament to his skill and strength. The climb is graded E7 6c and rises 19m up the near vertical edge.
Info
Mention should be made of Outside in Hathersage, a great climbing shop with a great cafe upstairs. Go look at shiny stuff, and treat yourself to a bite and a brew afterwards!
There are thousands of Cottages, Hotels, B&BS, Farms and many more choices of accommodation in the Peak District. Stay in a 4 star hotel in luxury or set up camp in a one of the hundreds of campsites. Stay on a working farm or relax in a lodge in one of the many Country parks. Peak district hotels abound with hotels in the peak district being some of the most sought after hotels in the country.

Hi everyone, I'm a mature but enthusiastic sort of climber and am looking to find a partner or group of people to climb with on sundays or maybe a wednesday in the peaks. Any grade of route up to about hvs. Indoors as well, once a week.
- Peter Warriner - Hi Trevor. I need a Climb partner(s) Not got much practice on grit stone and none on trad routes but very eager to learn. Have done a reasonable bit of Lime stone and sports routes. Got my own gear and 50m rope. Climb indoors at Stockport.
- Peter Warriner - Can also make it down to Red point Birmingham, it's a little further but not much.
- Trevor Allen - Hi Peter, how about outside in the peaks on some trad routes next tues, wed or thurs or next sunday. If its not raining. Stockport and Birmingham are too far to go for me to do an indoors day. I go indoors at my local Nottingham wall when I can.
- Trevor Allen - Hi michael, does that mean you are free to go out climbing up to the 18th or not. If so how about getting together sometime next week. Say on wednesday. At a venue of your choice
- Peter Warriner - Hi Trevor. Next Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday all work for me. Can't make the Sunday but it wouldn't normally be a problem. I'm free all day those days.
- michael jones - off till the 18th but might plans for tues till thirs fancy meeting tomorrow at nottingham climbing centre or late friday?
