Portland
Surrounded by almost continuous limestone cliffs and with 1500+ sport routes, Portland is known as one of the best sport venues in the UK.
Being both east and west facing, Portland is often a good choice to get out the wind, and being on a peninsula just south of Weymouth, it often avoids bad weather seen on the mainland.
Info
There is no permanent camp site on Portland although one pub does sometimes make a field available. There is a handful of camping barns. More camp sites can be found in and around Weymouth, about 10 kilometres from Portland.
Directions
Access to the island itself is by a permanent land bridge from Weymouth. To get to the climbing areas, ascend through Fortuneswell and then take your pick! If you are not driving, most sectors are close to a bus which runs from Weymouth up to every ten minutes.

I am 32 years old from Italy but I've been living in Bath (UK) for the last 10 years. At the moment pushing into the low 7's and E's grades and psyched about climbing classic low 7's in Portland. Looking for a partner to crush a few in Portland.

- Jake Lloyd - I live in Southampton and climb at Portland/swanage/lulworth regularly. Can always use more partners who want to climb similar grades.. I'm working through the mid sevens at the moment also. When are you thinking of going?
-

Is anyone going on any trips this weekend (12th and 13th Sept) within the UK?
I'm up for anywhere that's within about a 3hr drive of London and can give lifts from there too.
My best sports lead is f6b+ and boulder to about V4-5.

The Red Crane Traverse (DWS)
taken @
Portland
Comment on movie - Msg Mateusz LoskotI'm completing deep water solo of The Red Crane Traverse (5 S0) on Deep Zawn in Lighthouse Area in Portland (Dorset, UK). Yeah! I, the new born Deep Water Soloist, love the waves beneath my feet, hehe :-) Recorded by Pantera.

- Mateusz Loskot - Kevin, Actually, I haven't fall yet, so I clearly haven't tasted all the aspects of DWS. Thus, I have an impression it was half-DWS only and that's why I'm hungry for getting back to Portland ;-)

- Kevin - Did you actually fall in at all?

- Mateusz Loskot - Sandy, thanks for the hints! I'll use them when I'm back to Portland, hopefully soon :-)
- Sandy Holford - fantastic starter DWS. go slightly further up the coast to 'temporary lifestyle' (HS 4b S0) to get as put by the guide 'the ideal intro to dws'. fantastic climb, can be done via a high route all h/.f abpve the lip, or up the edge with repeated heel hooks (my fave)

Makin' Bacon (DWS)
taken @
Portland
Comment on movie - Msg Mateusz LoskotDeep water soloing the Makin' Bacon (E1 5c, 6a/S1) problem in the Too Funky Beach Area subarea of Cave Hole area. However, I'm not sure if I did this boulder correctly along the original line. Looks like it may be unclear as I've seen on forum at rockfax.com. Recorded by Pantera.
