Home of the legendary "V" system (named by and for John `Vermin' Sherman in the 1990s) Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site is 32 miles northeast of El Paso and just one hour from the Mexican boarder. The park spans an impressive 860.3 acres and is named for the mountains' large natural rock basins, called "huecos." For millennia, huecos have supplied trapped rainwater for its desert inhabitants to drink. More recently, however, huecos provide the perfect climbing holy ground for the visitors of this West Texas rock mecca.
